Hojicha Cappuccino (Printable)

A creamy, aromatic Japanese tea latte with roasted hojicha and steamed milk for a smooth, toasty experience.

# What You Need:

→ Tea Base

01 - 2 teaspoons hojicha loose-leaf tea or 2 hojicha tea bags
02 - 1 cup filtered water

→ Milk

03 - 1 cup whole milk or oat milk for dairy-free option

→ Sweetener

04 - 1-2 teaspoons honey, maple syrup, or sugar (optional)

# How To Make It:

01 - Bring 1 cup of water to a gentle simmer. Add the hojicha tea leaves or tea bags. Steep for 3-4 minutes, then strain or remove the bags.
02 - While the tea steeps, heat the milk in a small saucepan or steam using a frother until hot but not boiling. Froth the milk until creamy and foamy.
03 - Pour the brewed hojicha equally into two cups. Stir in sweetener to taste, if desired.
04 - Gently pour the steamed milk over the tea, holding back the foam with a spoon. Spoon the remaining milk foam on top for a classic cappuccino finish.
05 - Serve immediately, optionally dusted with a pinch of hojicha powder or cinnamon.

# Helpful Tips:

01 -
  • It tastes like a cozy café drink but takes only 10 minutes and needs zero fancy equipment beyond what's already in your kitchen.
  • Hojicha has a naturally sweet, toasted flavor that makes you feel indulged without relying on sugary syrups or artificial creamers.
02 -
  • Don't let hojicha steep longer than 4–5 minutes or it becomes astringent and flat, losing that beautiful toasted quality that makes this drink special.
  • The difference between a thin, watery foam and thick, creamy foam comes down to milk temperature and patience—foam forms best when milk reaches about 150°F, which is hot enough to steam but cool enough that you can hold your finger in it for a few seconds.
03 -
  • Invest in a simple handheld milk frother (they're inexpensive) because it gives you consistent results and takes the guesswork out of foam-making.
  • Serve hojicha cappuccinos in the smallest cups you own—the beauty of this drink is that it's concentrated and intentional, not something you mindlessly chug.
