Mozzarella Stick Grilled Cheese (Printable)

Crispy mozzarella sticks layered with melted cheese in golden, buttery bread and served with marinara.

# What You Need:

→ Dairy & Cheese

01 - 8 frozen mozzarella sticks
02 - 4 slices mozzarella cheese

→ Bread

03 - 4 slices Italian or sourdough bread

→ Sauces

04 - 1/2 cup marinara sauce (plus extra for dipping)

→ Butter & Oil

05 - 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened

# How To Make It:

01 - Bake the mozzarella sticks following package directions until golden and crispy. Keep warm.
02 - Spread a thin layer of softened butter on one side of each bread slice.
03 - Place two bread slices buttered side down. Layer each with 2 slices mozzarella cheese, 4 cooked mozzarella sticks, and 2 tablespoons marinara sauce.
04 - Cover with the remaining bread slices, buttered side up.
05 - Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat. Cook sandwiches 3–4 minutes per side, pressing gently, until bread is golden and cheese is melted.
06 - Remove from heat, slice in half, and serve hot with extra marinara sauce for dipping.

# Helpful Tips:

01 -
  • The mozzarella sticks stay creamy inside while the bread gets impossibly golden and crispy outside.
  • It bridges the gap between indulgent appetizer and satisfying meal, so you feel good about lunch.
  • No fancy technique required—just butter, heat, and about 20 minutes from start to finish.
02 -
  • The mozzarella sticks must be fully cooked before the sandwich hits the pan, or the outside will burn before the inside melts.
  • Don't skip pressing the sandwich gently as it cooks—it helps the cheese meld and keeps everything from shifting as you flip it.
  • Medium heat is crucial; high heat chars the bread while leaving the cheese cold in the center.
03 -
  • Let your butter soften for 10 minutes before spreading so it distributes evenly and creates an even golden crust.
  • Medium heat is your friend here—rush it on high heat and the bread burns while the cheese stays cold in the center.
  • Slice the sandwich diagonally; it cuts through the layers more cleanly and the presentation just feels right.
